Molly Abraham, Detroit News Restaurant Critic: One of the few local restaurants to serve such classic German dishes as sauerbraten, jaeger schnitzel and kassler rippchen, with accompaniments of sauerkraut and red cabbage, the Richter family's cozy 94-seat spot has managed to survive against trendier competitors since 1970. Founded by Roland Richter Sr., it is now run by his son, Roland Jr., and his wife, Anita. Hardly anything has changed here over the years, except for the welcome addition of beer and wine. This is more like a restaurant in a small town than in a big city. It's reassuringly non-trendy and it is comfortable in an old-school way. Desserts and bread are still made by the senior Richter.

First, the bad news. German food hasn't won any popularity polls lately. Now the good news. If you are just about the only restaurant in the area that serves sauerbraten, schnitzel and other traditional German dishes, you are going to find a clientele nonetheless. (Full review)
