CLOSED: Gandhi

Molly Abraham: Gandhi offers a serene setting with white linens and nicely set tables for a menu of reasonably priced northern Indian fare. An especially good introduction to the fare are the special dinners, served for two, one vegetarian ($22.95) and one including meat ($24.95). The vegetarian array includes soup or samosa - a stuffed turnover - followed by cheese and mixed vegetables in a creamy sauce (malai kofta), potatoes and cauliflower in a mildly spicy sauce (aloo gobi), tomatoes, spinach, onion and housemade cheese (saag ponir), basmati rice and for dessert, rice pudding. The version with meat starts off with soup or samosa, followed by chicken tikka masala, lamb curry, chickpeas and potatoes with a spicy sauce and the same finishing touches of rice and rice pudding, along with coffee or tea. And the dinners, in 2005, are still the same price they were when the restaurant opened in 2001. Of course, there is a la carte ordering as well from a well-organized menu of tandoori dishes, rice (biryani) dishes, and chicken, lamb and seafood selections. Weekday buffet lunches are $5.99. Service is courteous and helpful.
